Overview

Designed and conducted a controlled experiment to examine how emotional content affects reaction times in bilingual language-switching tasks. Managed the full research pipeline from stimulus design through behavioral data analysis, exploring the cognitive cost of switching languages when emotional valence is involved.

The Challenge

Bilingual users constantly switch between languages in digital products, but language switching has a cognitive cost. When emotional content is involved (error messages, notifications, persuasive copy), does that cost change? Understanding this interaction has direct implications for designing multilingual interfaces that account for cognitive load.

Research Approach

  • Designed stimuli varying in emotional valence (positive, negative, neutral) across two languages
  • Conducted a controlled experiment measuring reaction times during language-switching tasks
  • Managed the full pipeline: stimulus design, experimental setup, data collection, and statistical analysis
  • Applied ANOVA to examine main effects and interactions between language switching and emotional valence

Why these methods?

A controlled experiment was necessary to isolate the specific interaction between emotion and language switching. Reaction time is the standard behavioral measure for cognitive cost because it's sensitive, objective, and comparable across conditions. ANOVA was appropriate here because the design was fully factorial (valence × language) with clear categorical levels, making it the most interpretable approach for this question.

Key Findings

  • Emotional valence significantly interacted with language-switching costs, affecting reaction times
  • Negative emotional content amplified the cognitive cost of switching, suggesting heightened processing demands
  • Results point to the importance of considering emotional context when designing bilingual/multilingual interfaces

Impact

This research highlights a often-overlooked factor in multilingual UX: the emotional context of language switching. The findings suggest that error states, warnings, and emotionally charged content should be handled with extra care in multilingual products, particularly around when and how language switches occur.

Reflections

This was my first time owning a study end-to-end, and the biggest learning was how much stimulus design shapes your results. Small decisions (word frequency, familiarity, length) introduce confounds if you're not careful. Next time I'd add a more granular arousal measure alongside valence to disentangle whether it's the negativity or the intensity of emotions that drives the switching cost.
